Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant Increase: What It Means for Homeowners

The Government has announced an increase to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant for eligible off-gas properties, providing even greater support for homeowners looking to switch to a low-carbon heating system.

From 21 July 2026, eligible households in England and Wales could receive £9,000 towards the cost of a heat pump installation, up from the current £7,500 grant.

Who Is Eligible?

The increased grant is available to homeowners whose property:

  • Is not connected to the mains gas network
  • Currently uses oil or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) for heating
  • Is located in England or Wales
  • Is an existing property rather than a new build
  • Is not connected to a heat network

The enhanced grant applies to:

  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Ground source heat pumps

Why Is This Good News?

Many rural homes across the UK still rely on oil or LPG heating systems. While these systems can be effective, they are often subject to fluctuating fuel prices and higher carbon emissions.

The increased Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding is designed to make the switch to renewable heating more affordable, helping homeowners:

  • Reduce their reliance on fossil fuels
  • Improve their home’s energy efficiency
  • Lower their carbon footprint
  • Protect themselves from future fuel price volatility
  • Benefit from a more sustainable heating solution

How Much Could You Save?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme works by providing a grant that is deducted directly from the installation cost.

From 21 July 2026, eligible homeowners could receive:

  • £9,000 towards an air source heat pump
  • £9,000 towards a ground source heat pump

This means the upfront investment required to upgrade your heating system could be significantly reduced.

Thinking About a Heat Pump?

If your home currently uses oil or LPG heating, now could be an excellent time to start exploring your options.

Although the increased grant does not take effect until July 2026, homeowners considering a future upgrade can benefit from an early assessment of their property’s suitability. Understanding factors such as insulation levels, radiator requirements and overall system design can help you plan ahead and make the most of the available funding.
